And I’m not talking about a college mascot. Can a Cougar change her spots? (Yes, I know, a cougar isn’t the one who has spots). My girlfriend called to tell me that one of her husband’s twentysomething coworkers just went through a bad breakup and was “huntin’ for some cougar” and thought I might be interested. Well of course, what not-by-choice celibate thirtysomething wouldn’t be?? It got me thinking, what is the actual definition of a ‘cougar”? And was Mrs. Robinson in ‘The Graduate’ the ultimate cougar model?
Here’s an excerpt from ABC News (2005) when the cougar term first hit…
What do Samantha on “Sex and the City,” and Gabrielle on “Desperate Housewives” have in common? Sex and relationships columnist Valerie Gibson would call them “cougars” — women who date men more than eight years their junior — and they’re part of a trend that’s coming off the screen and out of the bedroom.
Gibson says the term originated in Vancouver, British Columbia, as a put-down for older women who would go to bars and go home with whoever was left at the end of the night. But now, it’s more positive — describing women usually their in 30s and 40s, who are financially stable and mentally independent and looking for a younger man to have fun with.
Eight years younger, are you kidding me, that’s nothing! Why is it perfectly fine for a guy to date date a girl 10 to 20 years younger and when a woman does it, she’s a cougar. I call B S Double Standard! No offense to my age group, but I know why men do it, going out with someone younger make you feel younger! For those of us lying about our age, this isn’t a bad thing. Some younger guys love the Mrs. Robinson action. Throw in a pair of ‘Hot for Teacher’ glasses and it’s all over.
Bring it on…arrrrrrrrrrrr. Demi and Ashton. Enough said.
